Twitter uses this to establish authenticity of well known accounts so users can trust that a legitimate source is authoring their Tweets. Twitter says that their “…verified accounts program is currently closed to the public” and that they are “not able to accept public requests for verification.”
Interesting. I have had my twitter account longer than I have had my hubpages account but I still have not figured out just how to fully utilize twitter. I seemed to be doing a lot of following but no one was interested in really following me (I guess because I looked like I had nothing to offer and I did not have celebrity status). So I decided to work hard and do something significant before I can go back. But then, not long after I began getting followers whom I discovered were either spammers or marketers who wanted me to buy their products, that is when I learned that there are 'circles' there too where one can link with people that have the same interests. I got quite a few followers from there but the relationships felt superficial because I still did not understand the purpose of twitter! I am still gauging it.

Interesting ideas here on how to get more followers. Don't you have to be a celebrity or someone famous or well known to be verified? I've always just assumed that since everyone I've seen verified are celebrities.
