Stylish Dog Collars - Different Types of Dog Collars

It is said that dog is man’s best friend, and most pet owners agree with this as their dog is their pride and joy. Pets are usually pampered a lot by the owners and a good way to spoil the dog is by getting him/her supplies from a dog store. This can include special treats, doggie clothing, a wash and trim, beautiful dog collars, etc. Dog collar is one of those supplies which give a special feeling as it distinguishes your dog from others. It reflects the type of dog and also gives a hint about the type of owner one is. There is a vast variety of dog collars available in the market, but there are only few basic types. Lets’ look at these types and see how each type of collar can be used to spoil the pet.

The most basic dog collar is buckle collar which is used to tie a pet and keep him from running away. The size of these collars can be adjusted according to dogs’ neck size, as it has a buckle and a tongue. There are two main types of buckle collar; rolled collar and flat collar. Rolled collars are made out of leather and are best suitable for places where the dog will not get them wet. While flat collar is made out of nylon and is not affected by water or heat much. So this type of collar is very comfortable for the pet. Another thing to remember is that, for dogs with small hair flat collar should be used and for dogs with long hair rolled dog collar should be used.

Second type of collar is Elizabethan fancy dog collar. Even these collars are very common and it seems as if the dog is wearing a lamp shade around his neck. These dog collars are very useful for dogs that have undergone a medical procedure. This is because the collar prevents them from biting the treated areas or chewing away the stitches or wounds.

If your dog needs special training or has barking problems then you need an electronic collar. This device also disciplines your pet by giving it a signal whenever required. The signal can be in the form of a mild electronic shock, a sound or a spray of liquid like citronella. These collars can be activated automatically, for example when a dog barks, or it can even be controlled with a remote. This collar can even be used to trace your pet, for example when you have taken him for hunting. No matter what way this collar is used, it is helpful in disciplining your dog.

I had no idea that there were collars that could electronically be signaled to spray a liquid like citronella. Interesting!

Thanks for your informative hub. I never knew there were so many different types of collars. On a similar subject, does your dog wear clothes? I have bought a few sweaters for my best friend, but he hates them all.
